The Internet of Things could be 30 billion connected devices strong by the time this decade is out, but how secure is it? Davey Winder investigates.

Early users of the internet, those of us who were already immersed in the minutiae of cyberspace more than two decades ago, will recall coffee machines and controllable cameras connected to the internet and accessible via it.

However, the Internet of Things was always destined to be more than just a geeky gimmick; it would become what it is today, where everything from baby listening devices to smartwatches and smartphones, domestic appliances and even foodstuffs are always-on, sharing data and allowing remote access.
