A vast quantity of data is being generated all over the world. Even as we read this, people are updating their Facebook and Twitter profiles, satellites are imaging the universe, computers are sequencing genes in laboratories and machines are recording results of experiments. What do we do with all this Big Data?

“Big data has applications in healthcare, design, manufacture, climate change, finance, social media analytics, etc. Twitter alone generates 500 million tweets every day,” said Prof N Balakrishnan, Associate Director of Indian Institute of Science (IISc) at the inauguration of the International Conference on Computational and Data Intensive Science at the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) here on Monday.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) established the Centre for Mathematical Modelling and Computer Simulation (CMMACS) in Bangalore 25 years ago. The centre celebrated its silver jubilee in 2012-13.
