When it comes to big data and analytics, IBM’s Marie Wallace knows what she’s talking about. As the Analytics Strategist for IBM, she’s spent more than a decade in the research & development division building content, semantics, and social analytics technologies which today underpin such solutions as IBM Watson.

Wallace sees great potential to extract meaningful data from internal and external social streams, but she believes our technology might have gotten ahead of society’s ability to deal with this deluge of data. We can learn a lot about customers, but we have to be very cautious we don’t slip from curious into creepy and scaring and offending your employees and your customers. When we use data wisely and well, it has the potential to give us incredible insight and predictive abilities. When we use it poorly, we look clumsy and even menacing.
